Ethnography of Tutoring Environments

"You are never to old to set another goal or dream another dream" -C. S. Lewis
The following document is an ethnography of tutoring environments that I researched as part of the Ethnography of Learning Environments course. In this document, I compare my observations of local high school students in a variety of tutoring environments to past research on best practices in tutoring programs. I highlight the social and cultural factors that affect the success of a tutoring program and how each program can adapt to meet the needs of its target population. Writing this ethnography was an excellent exercise in critical thinking as I had to investigate a multitude of factors that can affect learning in a highly specialized learning environment. The effectiveness of different types of reward mechanisms, such as the ability to collaborate, used in each context was a unique piece of information that I was not expecting to uncover. The schools that I observed were providing students with a new hope after the public school system had given up on them. Regardless of the techniques being used in the classroom, the schools were hoping to support these students in achieving their dream, and that set them in the right direction.
