Language Instruction

Psycholinguistics and Its Applications

As mentioned in my philosophy, the topic of education that I am most interested in is language instruction and language acquisition. The following research papers are topics that I have investigated from a psychology perspective that are directly relevant to my interest in language. The paper comparing sign language and spoken language reflects the similarities between the two languages, an idea that is easily overlooked when talking about integrating students with disabilities. This paper addresses my interest in whether all kinds of languages are acquired in the same way or whether it varies depending on the medium of the communication within a language. The second paper relates more closely with education and language instruction. Using my theoretical knowledge of the psychological processes involved in language and writing, I discuss my suggestions for a writing workshop that will help students improve their writing and written communication skills. This is a skill set that is most prominently missing in underprivileged student populations because of their lack of exposure to good writing. I believe that a better understanding of the psychological processes involved in communication, both written and oral, will help us address the needs of communities that lack the resources available to students in a higher socio-economic class.
