My senior thesis on high school dropouts and factors that contribute to disengagement has helped me to understand the various factors that contribute to student engagement or disengagement in school. I’ve learned about factors as specific as using proper praise to fostering a positive school climate. Most importantly, I found that students who come from disadvantaged backgrounds are significantly more likely to drop out of school or become disengaged. However, many school factors can serve as protective factors if the proper measures are in place. Some of the most important factors include a positive school climate, positive student-teacher relationships, a culture of high expectations, providing students with the resources to succeed, and ensuring fair disciplinary practices. Beyond that, my thesis helped me to understand that children’s attitudes towards school are formed at the earliest ages. Thus, it is vital for each student to feel a sense of belonging and competence in order to form a positive affect towards school.
