Over the course of my time at Hamilton, my independence in my classes has grown, as the more advanced classes allow more freedom to research and examine the topics that most interest us. With this independence in my higher level psychology, sociology, and education classes, I have dedicated a lot of time to understanding various issues in education. This section contains two projects that I have completed surrounding the issues of (1) disparities in access to special education services and resources and (2) school readiness. Both of these papers highlight my focus on socioeconomic status and race and how these two factors can lead to great advantage or disadvantage. I focus on how education has the potential to be an equalizer, but it often ends up reinforcing or even exacerbating many pre-existing differences.
