Historians presume that the dish originated in China and made its way to Georgia during the Mongol invasion of the thirteenth century (Söderlind, 2011).  The Mongol invasion reached Georgia in 1234, forced Georgians into submission by 1238, and lasted until the late 1330s ("Mongol Invasions of Georgia and Armenia").
