The makers of knedlíky were women. In Eastern and Central Europe, women were relegated to the domestic sphere and given full responsibility for cooking, cleaning and raising children. As a result, dumplings, which were so frequently featured in meals, were cooked by a woman, or the homemaker. It is reported that the test of a well-run household in the quality of the mehlspeisen, or warm dessert, homemade from fresh ingredients; in Czech culture, this would typically be a sweet knedlíky dumpling.
